Economy & money editorial cartoons

Editorial cartoons about interest rates, inflation, currencies and the cost of living. Read each edition’s dated context and original sources alongside its satire.

A hand-drawn editorial cartoon shows a giant oil barrel redesigned as a checkout terminal, marked “BRENT ~$104.” A conveyor carries a fuel can, grocery basket, and factory toward it while an extremely long receipt winds around them. A smirking checkout clerk holds the receipt and gestures toward the purchases. The scene uses warm ivory paper, dark crosshatched outlines, and muted blue, rust, ochre, and olive accents.

Uncertainty, Delivered

Brent crude climbed to about $104 a barrel on Thursday as fears over Middle East oil supplies intensified. Shares fell across Europe and Asia, underscoring the international economic fallout of the conflict.

A hand-drawn editorial cartoon shows Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro outside a grand Brazilian presidential building, each carrying a large incomplete pie-shaped key toward a locked door marked “MAJORITY.” A clerk holds a tray of assorted missing pieces and says, “The missing piece belongs to people you haven’t persuaded.” A calendar shows 25 OCT, and a Brazilian flag and government buildings appear in the background.

Majority Required

Brazil’s electoral court confirmed that Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will face an October 25 runoff after neither secured a majority, extending the contest for Latin America’s largest economy.

Editorial cartoon in a cream-paper, crosshatched style. Inside a Bank of Japan control room, an operator pulls a large upward lever beneath a sign reading “POLICY RATE: 1% → 1.25% ANNOUNCED.” A worried yen-symbol balloon sinks outside the window over a Japanese cityscape, while an assistant reads a manual. A speech bubble asks, “We raised the rate. Did anyone tell the yen?”

Rates Up, Yen Down

The Bank of Japan approved a rate rise from 1% to 1.25%, a 31-year high, to counter inflation risks. The yen nevertheless weakened as traders questioned the pace of further increases. (aol.com)

A worried personified globe fills a small car at a petrol pump. The hose narrows into a funnel labelled STRAIT OF HORMUZ containing tiny oil tankers, while the pump display reads BRENT $100+ / BARREL.

The narrowest part of the budget

Brent crude rose above $100 a barrel on September 9 as the US–Iran war escalated. AP reported renewed tanker attacks and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for world oil supplies.
